Val Kilmer

By: Jordan (An Extra)

Some stars get too much bad press. A little thing, or a few little things, can create a negative buzz fast. But a particular star I know, who has been put thru the tabloid wringer more than a few times, turned out to be a hero in my case.

I was working as an extra on the set of the Oliver Stone film ‘The Doors’. We were asked to show up as hippies, which was simple for me, as that is my daily style anyway. Anyway, I took a couple of friends and we drove out to L.A. to the shoot site underneath a dark freeway overpass. It was a concert scene and the “auditorium” was filled with “fans”. Val Kilmer, in the role as Jim Morrison, did some scenes on stage and then seemed to disappear.  The extras milled around while things were arranged and finally we got ready to start back up. I happened to glance back over my shoulder, and to my surprise, saw Val standing about two feet away right in the middle of the crowd of extras. No one else seemed to notice, and I do not suffer ever from being star struck, so I just made a mental note and got ready to hippie out for the scene. As we heard the playback music cue up, suddenly everyone around me noticed Val there. Very, very unprofessionally, they all got excited and made a mad rush toward him. In the process I was pushed to the ground and trampled. As I said my prayers, I felt a strong hand grab me by the wrist and pull me up to my feet. To my utter amazement, it was Val Kilmer! I stammered a thank you and he quickly left the area, so as not to cause more unintentional mayhem. Never saw him again, and think he may well not even remember his heroic deed. But I will never forget it, and anytime I hear an unsavory report, I try to tell the story to whoever might be near.
