Ian Somerhalder is one of the hottest properties in acting right now. With multiple Teen Choice Awards, a Screen Actors’ Guild Award, and countless other accolades, you would think he would not need to take time to schmooze with the little people. I know personally that such is not the case. He stands up for us little guys, is very generous, always helping others, and generous with gifts. Most importantly, he finds joy in making people feel good. There are so many wonderful stories I want to share about Ian, but I had to control myself and pick only a few. Otherwise I would have enough material for an entire book! Since ‘The Diaries’ is a vampire show, we often shoot at night and the locations are usually in remote areas. On location, there were ALWAYS fans surrounding the set. Many fans would wait 12 to 15 hours in below freezing winter weather or muggy hot summer conditions just to get the briefest glimpse of our actors. Even after a long night of shooting, you could always expect Ian to get out to the fans to greet them. It didn’t matter if he was exhausted or needed to get some rest for the next day’s early set call. He always took lots of time to take photos, and to hug and kiss fans. One time, when he had injured himself during an action scene (torn ACL) and was limping in pain, he asked his driver to stop on the way to basecamp from shooting so that he could show his appreciation to his fans. And his fans adore him right back. Recently, fans raised over $11,000 for Ian’s birthday project. The funds were used to support the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, an environmentally based endeavor. And his giving does not stop there. In 2010, Ian was on the scene of the Deep Water Horizon oil disaster scrubbing down wildlife and assisting human victims in getting the proper information to get government recovery help. This guy is a giving powerhouse!
