Thus far, I have been blessed to work with Ian Somerhalder for the past two years. Hopefully there will be many more to come. He’s a gorgeous human being and has the biggest human heart to match. One early morning while working on ‘The Vampire Diaries’, I noticed that Ian was extra happy. Ebullient. Intrigued, I asked how he was doing. He answered, “ I am going to buy Jess a brand new car,” adding, “It’ll be a surprise. She’s never had a new car in all her life. It’s about time she drives in style and safety.”
Jess is Ian’s very lucky assistant. You can probably imagine the look on her face when she saw that brandspanking new black Audi! Ian seems to genuinely appreciate the people that surround him, whether they are close friends, employees or fans. He recently said, “You can’t get anywhere in life without the people who have come into your life.” I think he is very wise for someone in his early 30’s. He has discovered that treating
people right is its own reward!
And he definitely has a “pay it forward” mentality. I recently found out that Ian has his hand in many philanthropic pies. For instance, he and his brother Bob run a recycled furniture business called Built of Barnwood. This gives him the opportunity not only to reduce customers’ carbon footprints by reusing and recycling materials, but also to donate a portion of the profits to his very own foundation. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation “supports projects that protect habitat and nurtures our furry friends.”
Ian also promotes the It Gets Better Project, which supports LGBT youths and focuses on suicide prevention in coordination with the Trevor Project. If only the world had more Ian’s around!
